This is a relaxing and enjoyable way to do a short trip to the Grand Canyon. I did not include any additional tours that are available as I wanted to take my time and enjoy the areas within walking distance. More than enough time to walk leisurely and not rushed, grab a bite to eat, wander the gift shops, and just take in the beauty that is the Grand Canyon. Upgraded seats to luxury which really made the experience better with access to walk the entire train and enjoy the outdoor landing as the train cruises.
This historic railway makes its daily round-trip journey from the tiny town of Williams, and travels 65 miles to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The slow speed of the train allows the passengers to enjoy the scenery outside. The train and the Station were very clean, and masks were required throughout the trip. We arrived at the Station an hour before departure. That gave us time to find parking, browse around in the gift shop for unique gifts and Christmas Ornaments, plus witness a silly, but cute, Wild- West Show before boarding. En route, there was a guitarist and singer for live entertainment, and a faux robbery with bandits on horseback, who stopped the train and “robbed” us on the return journey. It was a good way for tourists like us to visit the Grand Canyon from Flagstaff, and leave the “driving” to someone else. At the Grand Canyon itself, we had ample time to hike the “Trail of Time” trail and have a quick lunch before returning to our seats on the train. The day’s outing was worth our time and the money we spent on it. We had a lot of fun, and we recommend it to other travelers who love historic trains such as these.
What a great way to get to the canyon! Cameron was amazing and such a great host for our relaxing ride! Riding coach was great and while I have read 3-star and lesser reviews regarding the scenery and other situations that are out of the control of train operators- none of our experience was sub par at all. Highly recommend it, especially for families with kids, you’ll have a great time! Thanks again to Cameron for making the ride SO fun and educational!
This was a scenic and easy way to travel to the Grand Canyon. We so enjoyed our trip to Williams and thought the town was charming and interesting. The train was clean, the ticket process and boarding very easy, the cabin attendant personable, the onboard entertainment fun. However, we were concerned that mask-wearing was not enforced and the three people sitting across from us did not wear theirs for more than a few minutes at the beginning of the train ride (and one of them had a terrible cough). This was our first trip in almost two years and we had visited several places before we got to Williams and felt comfortable and safe everywhere else. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable day and we were glad to have had the experience of traveling to the majestic Grand Canyon by train.
What a fun day it was! It was pouring down that morning and we ended up buying a couple of raincoats in the gift shop. Before the train leaves they are doing a Wild West shootout; it was fun, hokey and the actors were very hard to understand. Boarding the train was quick and easy; we had splurged on the dome car and loved it. Madison, our tour guide was funny and knowledgeable and we enjoyed listening to her. She was also an excellent bar tender. They served some snacks (yoghurt and muffins) on the to the GC and cheese, salami and crackers coming back. Very nice. During our trip the sun came came out and we were able to enjoy this magnificent canyon...but the rain came back in for of a thunderstorm and it was quite an awesome experience. They have some entertainment in form of guitar players coming through each car and we enjoyed singing along. The people in our car were super fun and everyone was talking to others. We had a 'train robbery' (the same actors that do the shootout in the morning; we could do without this. Parking at the depot is plenty and free. We think it was money well spent (yes, the dome car is expensive!) and it was on our bucket list.
After encountering freezing rain & sleet when driving to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, we turned around and decided to try the train ride the next day. We booked mid level seats and enjoyed the 2 hour+ ride up and the drop-off was right near the Hotel & trail along the rim. We had about 3 hrs to explore, and the video theater that showed history & overview was closed. There was also still snow & ice (near noon) on several of the walkways, and we were very surprised that they hadn't been shoveled for safety sake! We took photos, walked the rim and got 2 brats for lunch with no seating except a few park benches (which were full). The ride home seemed forever, but it was an OK experience. They had a musician playing guitar each way, and the train was robbed on the way back by bandits (with a hat for $$ or valuables) which thrilled the kids onboard. Staff on the train was helpful & fun and both the engineer & fire-person were female & running the train! The only one in USA with both ladies in the engine compartment!
If I could rate higher than a 5, I would. Everything about the train trip from Williams, Arizona to the Grand Canyon Depot was superb. This is a bucket list item and should not be missed. The Grand Canyon Railway employees made the entire day a first rate experience. It was easy to book, emails were informative and getting the tickets was all seamless. The cowboy wrangler show before boarding the train was fun. The train ride was fantastic. You travel to the Grand Canyon like visitors did in 1901-. Our hostess in our rail car, Carol was so informative, made us comfortable and provided excellent service. She made us feel like family. The entertainment during the train ride just added to the experience. This is a well-run operation! FYI-They offer a Polar Express experience starting November 1st.
This full day adventure is so much fun & a great way to travel to the Grand Canyon! My husband &I started our day with the Wild West show that is part of your Grand Canyon Railway package! Then boarded the train to the Grand Canyon, where we enjoyed food, drinks, & entertainment during the 2 hour 15 minutes ride to the canyon & on the return trip to Williams! Great fun for the whole family!
We booked a day trip to the Grand Canyon by train. We choose the dome ride for a more scenic trip. We had coffee, tea or bottle water, and muffins, yogurt and fruit cups available. The service attendant gave us information that was helpful plus onsite recommendations. It was a very pleasant trip. On the way back we choose the luxury dome train car and was very pleasantly surprised with a free glass of champagne After that we purchased wine and kicked back and relaxed. While at Grand Canyon we took a bus tour Nice way to see the Grand Canyon.
