This last minute tour was unforgettable. We were picked up by Leander the switched to Bennie. They made sure to explain how long they ran the business and their history with the canyon. They showed us all the ruins and the petroglyph on the canyons. Bennie also shared stories how life was growing up in the canyon and how he used to climb them. He also told us how the Anasazi used to lived and survived the canyons. This tour was amazing and beautiful. I'm going to cherish this and I hope we can go back again
Daniel was informative and engaging. He also gave me my Navajo name while on the drive back in the dark with the light of what was to be the blood moon that night. :-) The poignant history of the canyon is not to be discounted. It adds to the beauty of this place. He answered our questions and pointed out features we would have missed. Lots of wows and sighs, lots of laughs, and whole lot of memories. I recommend the private tours as having more interaction with a local adds more to the experience. This tour combines nature, history, and adventure.
Leander, the Navajo guide and owner, was excellent. We learned a lot about the Canyon and, more importantly, about the Navajo Nation. We loved hearing an insider's honest perspective about his people. I highly recommend the Private Tour, rather than the group tour offered by other companies. It's a little more expensive, but it is well worth it. As they say, you get what you pay for. Thank you, Leander.
Ben was a fabulous guide! We spent three ours with him learning all about Canyon de Chelly. He is Navaho and grew up in the canyon. His aunt still lives there so he was able to share very personal stories about growing up there. The history of the various tribes was fascinating. Highly recommend.
The experience was fantastic. Benjamin was our drive. So much knowledge of the canyon because he grew up in the canyon. Very impressed with his stories about being a child growing up there. The other drivers have some very big shoes to fill as a tour guide of Canyon de Chelly. Thank you Benjamin 😊
We had a three-hour tour with TJ Hunter as our guide. It was an amazing experience. TJ told us about Navajo culture and traditions, as well as his own family and upbringing. He had spent much of his childhood in the canyon; a time when there was water in the streams year-round. Now, the dried-out stream beds are the "roads" into the canyon, and it takes skill to drive them. He explained the meaning of Beauty Way, living in a holistic environment of Beauty, Balance, Harmony, and Well-Being. Note there are four elements, which is a recurring theme in Navajo culture/tradition, which he also explained to us. He showed us how to throw an arrow using an atlatl, he was within a foot of his intended target some 100 yards away, and how he made arrow heads of obsidian. In addition to the ruins, he took us to meet a weaver who lived in the canyon. She showed us the process of carting, hand spinning, and weaving. She also told us about her life. On the way back, he told us about skinwalkers and Navajo history. How rumors about gold in the canyon caused the US cavalry to forcibly remove the Navajo and force them to walk to Bosque Redondo, the Long March where more than 200 perished. The Navajo were allowed to return after four years, when no gold had been discovered. Altogether a memorable experience.
Our guide, Davidson, was knowledgeable and generous with his time. He provided explanations and insights to the different native American tribes that lived in Canyon de Chelly, current culture of the Navajo living there and took us to many beautiful and breathtaking areas within the Canyon. A magical afternoon.
