Let me preface this by saying that I have not ridden a train since I was child, (Disneyland does not count!). This is not expensive especially for a one time experience, we booked 3 tickets in first class for my wife and son, everything was complimentary, snacks, soft drinks, water, coffee etc. We had very comfy seats facing each other and were in air conditioned cars, there was a restroom inside and they had bar service, our attendant very funny and polite. There were 2 different singers on the train for entertainment, that was nice. About 2.5 hrs one way at 40MPH, it is so relaxing to just relax and watch the scenery. On the way back we were faux robbed, by actors lol, that was fun. I highly recommend to do it at least once. We purchased this along with our hotel tickets and did the tour as well.
The van picked us up in Sedona, and others along the way to the train ride. Train ride is corny, but cute. Glad we did it. Really enjoyed the van and driver (Smoky). Got to see more of the GC than we would have on our own, plus stops at Navajo stores, and views of the painted desert.
The Williams Grand Canyon Railway to the Grand Canyon was a wonderful experience and I would recommend this excursion to all my family and friends. The intertainment on board the train was fun and our PSA (Personal Service Attendent) was a delight with his humor and informative tidbits about the history of the railway, surrounding landmarks and great customer satisfaction. We enjoyed the live music by talented musicians and the mock train robbery with bandits riding up to stop the train. It was well worth the price and I would do the trip again. Marcel Caruana
So great!!! My whole family had a wonderful time! Best way to travel to the Grand Canyon! No screens, no complaining, just family fun! Even at the Pullman car level this is not a cheap trip, but you are riding in a 100 year old train folks- it is expensive to keep it going! Don't expect something overly chic. Expect good, kind, hardworking folks from the small town of Williams bending over backwards to show you a great time on the way to the grand canyon! So fun!
We upgraded to the dome and wish we hadn't- The lower seat had more leg room that the upgraded seats. There wasn't anything to see but trees and rocks. Josh who was our host was fabulous (very nice eye candy). Would I do this again, NO. We also bought the motor coach- She gave us more info about the buildings that the view points of the canyon. Wish I would have driven up and saved $488.00.
We booked a railway adventure package for my wife, grandchildren and me well ahead of our expected trip. A couple of days before we were to travel, our dog became ill, requiring me to stay at home with her since we could not board her as planned. We called Xanterra to cancel out my portion of the trip (train ride, meals). Their policy is to treat that as a complete change, granting them the right to charge us higher, current costs. That meant that the price of the trip for the rest of the party increased significantly. The result was that I was given a pittance of a refund, not close to equaling the meals or the cost of my ticket. Yet, had we all canceled the trip, the whole trip was refundable! It's an unfair system. They ended up pocketing most of the fees we paid for my share. Further, my letter to Xanterra's executives went unanswered. We have used Xanterra for years in many parks. That practice is likely at an end for us.
We bought the train and motor coach rim tour with the buffet lunch. One week before our trip, we were notified the buffet lunch would not be available. However they were substituting a box lunch. A $15 buffet replaced by a sandwich, potato chips, cookie, and soda. Mostly stuff neither of us should/can eat (I'm diabetic). When I called they weren't even apologetic about it and the only option given was to cancel the motor coach tour! No, not opt out of the box lunch and refund that portion of our ticket. Cancel the tour. I chose to oblige and went a step further cancelling both the motor coach and the train. We'll go ahead and drive to the rim. I can understand the buffet lunch being beyond their control, but to think substituting a cheap box lunch w/o an option to opt out for a refund is, IMO, inexcusable. Certainly indicative of a business with little competition and no real regard for customers.
